- The trouble with new technology of any kind is that there is inevitably a confusing period when it appears in many different guises at once and none of them are compatible. For example, remember when you could buy video cassettes either as VCS or Betamax? Or, before that, the battle for supremacy for the audio tape market between the cassette and the eight–track cartridge? Nowhere has this been more pronounced than in the personal computer market.
