Working in a Classroom Without Walls

The European Innovative Education Forum (IEF) offers a platform for teachers from all over Europe to exchange ideas with education experts on innovative approaches to teaching and learning through the use of digital media. This year’s forum, which took place in Europe, resulted in the judges announcing two UK school winners for their use of innovative technology in the classroom. Simon Horleston won for his Climate Change Challenge and Jan Webb for the project titled ‘Working in a Classroom Without Walls’. Here, Jan discusses her unique project, which utilised exciting technology to engage with pupils in the classroom.

Getting to the point

Technology today is closely integrated with the world around us. Our mobile phones, for instance, can now tell where we are, point out the nearest train station or restaurant on a map, and give directions on how to get there. ICT in UK State Schools 2010

This BESA research into the opinions and trends of ICT in UK state schools shows that despite government funding cuts for ICT in education, schools appear to be remaining positive in their outlook. The research, carried out in conjunction with the National Education Research Panel (NERP) provides analysis into the likely provision of technology in UK state schools in the next year and gives extensive insight into teacher confidence, training and the level of ICT in schools.

Growth for Creative, Digital and I.T. Industries in the UK

This report, published by the Council for Industry and Higher Education, recommends that Stem subjects, including science and maths, should be extended to digital technology, as the digital industries will soon represent a $3tn (£1.9tn) market. At school level the report calls for a shake-up of the ICT curriculum which it accuses of holding back the development of creative digital industries.
