There’s no denying that it’s particularly challenging to think outside the box when so much that surrounds formal state-funded education, especially here in the UK, requires you to tick it instead. Kunskapsskolan, the Swedish schools operator, recently withdrew from sponsoring the four UK state schools it had run since 2009.

In 1921 the National Council of Schoolhouse Construction was established in North America. After changing its name in 1965 to the Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI), the organisation has recently re-branded once more – and is now known much more simply as the Association for Learning Environments, or A4LE for short.

LS 3.2 A wapping great undertaking

In 2009 a group of parents from the Wapping, Shadwell and Limehouse districts of East London got together to talk about the secondary education provision within their community. Even though Wapping had been an admissions priority area for over ten years, theirs was a part of the borough where single-sex post-eleven education remained the norm and the demographic had led to many local schools becoming stratified along lines of both gender and ethnicity. But they wanted something different: something truly inclusive. So they ended up establishing a new Free School – Wapping High School – which opened its doors in the crypt of a church in September 2012.

LS 3.2 The final frontier?

Dr Chris Gerry has been challenging the educational status quo for years. He’s been both headteacher and executive headteacher of six secondary schools over the past 18 years where he’s made significant changes to the way the curriculum is delivered. Most recently he was responsible for the rebuilding of Hugh Christie Technology College in Tonbridge – one of the first schools to be wireless and with a 1:1 student/device ratio – and later at New Line Learning and Cornwallis Academy in Maidstone. Now retired from teaching and working as a consultant, we asked him to reflect on the rationale behind the New Line Learning plazas and what’s happened since.

LS 3.2 Making a reality of your vision for learning

One of A4LE UK’s executive directors, Terry White, recently visited a school in South London that proved occupying an old Victorian Board School is no barrier to creating fantastically creative and supportive spaces in which large groups of students gather together to learn. The school was granted Teaching School Status by the National College in 2014. Here he explains what he saw there and details what he feels was important in making their vision a reality.
